King Edward VIII, King George VI and Princess Mary as children - circa 1900
14 September 1943. Buckingham Palace
“Has there been any word on His Majesty?” Queen Elizabeth inquired about her husband, King George VI, to her private secretary.
“I’m afraid not, Ma’am,” he replied in a solemn voice.
“I apologize for being so panicked. I haven’t received word from him since he left for Malta,” she said.
“I’m sure that His Majesty is alright, Ma’am,” he said. She had more reason to be worried after the death of Bertie’s brother in an aeroplane accident just weeks earlier.
“Ok then,” she said with a defeated tone. After he left, she went over to her stationary kit and began to pen perhaps what would be her final letter to Bertie.
